The other day Steeger was officially tendered $25, and immediate possession of the land was demanded. He had spent several thousand dollars on the hotel building, which was wanted at once for office purposes, and the money offered was one-half of the valuation of the property as assessed on January 1, 1005, and that that was all the city was authorised to pay him at that time. The sheriff told Steeger that the city was acting within its rights and refused to interfere. New York city has now applied to the Supreme court for an injunction restraining Steeger from interfering with the city’s possession of the entire premises and decision has been reserved. There is a law which prevents the sale of liquor on property owned by the city of New York, and this law the engineers will invoke. They expect to be at u-ork on the Ashokan reservoir for many years, and have moved their families to the Catskills, and many of them have bought property there, and they propose to bar liquor as a measure of selfprotection.
