THE FIRE DEPARTMENT OF HONG KONG.
DESPITE the obstacles placed in their way by Oriental superstition and prejudice, the English authorities and residents of Hong Kong, China, appear to have succeeded in organizing a pretty efficient fire protective system. In the equipment and workings of the department, it is true, there is a seemingly queer commingling of Oriental and Occidental, ancient and modern apparatus and methods, but this is in great part due to peculiar local conditions, some of which time will doubtless modify.
