The New Orleans fire department has added two steamers of the American Fire Engine Company make to its equipments. They were successfully tested recently in the presence of Chief Engineer O'Connor, several members of the board of fire commissioners, and others. G. F. and J. P. Ahrens, representing the company, conducted the test, which consisted of throwing water through various lengths of hose, and sizes of nozzles. The results showed that the new engines are most serviceable and powerful machines. Both arc alike, and will be designated Numbers 2 and 7. Each has two cylinders eight inches in diameter, and two water cylinders four and three-quarter inches in diameter, with a seven-inch stroke and a maximum capacity of 750 gallons per minute. Each weighs 6,900 pounds without water or fuel, and are the largest two of four ordered from the American Fire Engine Company. A new feature af these engines is in the pumps, which are of the latest design, and permit an examination of the valves without disconnecting any of the machinery; it being onlv necessary to unscrew the gates over the valve chambers, which can be done in a few minutes. With a one-inch nozzle engine No. 7 threw water in six and a half minutes, using 100 feet of hose. A double stream was then thrown through the same length of hose and the third trial was with both streams through a siamesed connection, with nozzles of one and a quarter, one and a half, and one and three-quarter inches. Water was thrown nearly the full length of a block. A particularly gratifying feature was the rapidity with which the water forced from the nozzles attained its full strength. Engine No. 2 was similarly tested, and with as satisfactory results, the machine discharging 1.500 gallons per minute. The final trial was through several hundred feet of hose. Chief Engineer O’Connor, who personally supervised the tests, stated that he considered the steamers equal to any now in use in the several large cities of the country. The American Eire Engine Company is at present very busy filling orders for new engines, having orders on hand for five steamers for Chicago, one for New York city, one each for Newark, N. J., Milwaukee, Chattanooga, and LanPa., and two for Washington, D. C.
