During a recent fire caused by the explosion of anhydrous ammonia in the ice machine room of the Indianapolis, Ind., Brewing Company, the fumes of the ammonia were sosuffocating as to render the approach of the firemen nearly an impossibility. They donned Vajen-Bader patent smokeprotectors, however—for the first time at a difficult fire in that city since the department adopted the apparatus. These helmets made it possible for the men to enter the building and reach 5he chemicel engines. They say that, although the fumes of ammonia were strong enough to render an unprotected fireman unconscious, the men wearing the helmets suffered no inconvenience from the fumes.

Pittsburgh, Pa., has just received a first-size latest improved Amoskeag steam fire engine; it being the first delivered of the recent contract made by that city for Amoskeag engines. At its trial the city officials expressed themselves greatly pleased with the fine showing of practical work performed. Washington, D, C., has contracted with the Manchester Locomotive works for one of the latest improved, second size, Amoskeag steam fire engines.
