The trial of the new Silsby fire steamer for Jacksonville, Ill., was eminently satisfactory. Fire was placed in the furnace, and in exactly 7 1/2 minutes, 40 pounds of steam was raised from ice cold water. First one stream was thrown through an inch and a half nozzle; then two streams were thrown through a one-inch nozzle to a point as high as the electric light tower. Then four streams were thrown higher than the highest building in the city. But the best test was made on East State street where water was drawn from a cistern and thrown 210 feet through one thousand feet of hose.
A great crowd witnessed the test of the new La France engine recently finished for Erie, Pa. It is of the third class. The engine through the various tests behaved in an admirable manner and gave entire satisfaction. The engine is known as the “ New La France Patent Piston Engine.” It has all the latest improvements, including a pump that was patented only a few months since. Willi this pump it takes the engine the same number of seconds to get into the valve motion that it required minutes for old pumps to do heretofore. This can be further appreciated whenever repairs are necessary. The entire engine is only thrown out of service for a short time when heretofore it required at least three days to repair an engine. The engine is powerful and will stand continuous service.
