METROPOLITAN ENGINE TESTED.
The new fire engine built by the American Fire Engine company for the fire department of Salt Lake City, was tested on August 19, 1902, and accented. Two severe tests were made—the results obtained more than meeting every requirement in the most satisfactory manner. The tests were conducted by John P. Ahrens, of the company, under the direction of Chief Devine and Councilman Davis. The new engine, which is a first-size Metropolitan and weighs about 8.500 pounds, was tested with hydrant pressure. In four minutes after fire was started in the engine a stream of water was obtained, and in less than six minutes sufficient steam pressure had been secured to run four streams. As soon as the engine had been got into good working order a test of its force in throwing water was made. Four lines of hose were attached, and water was thrown over the north end of the city and county building. This is something that the firedepartment has never been able to accomplish before with the engines at its disposal. A tost still more severe was made the following afternoon, when in six and one-half minutes after the match was applied a stream of water was flowing, it being pumped from the lake, forced through the hose, and hack into the lake. In eight minutes sixty pounds steam pressure had been secured and 105 pounds water pressure. With four lines of hose a test was made, and the record was 125 feet vertical and on an angle water was thrown almost across the lake. A water pressure of 236 pounds to the square inch was obtained when the engine was running at full force. The officials who witnessed the tests feel that the new steamer fills a long felt need in the city fire department.
Incendiaries caused $12,000 damage to the lumber and coal sh_____ds of Nowak Fafanski at Dunkirk, N. Y. While that fire was raging a match was touched to the Buffalo cor shops of the Lake Shore railroad and one of the large sheds was totally destroyed. After the firemen left the building the incendiaries applied the match the second time and burned part of another shed.
