Mayor Moore Makes Hit with Firemen
Members of Engine Company No. 40, Philadelphia, Pa., recently wrote to FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERING enclosing a clipping from a local paper on the public commendation accorded a short time ago by Mayor Moore to members of the fire department who had done something even more than usually heroic, in the line of duty, which is full of opportunities for heroism more than almost any other employment. Edwin S. Moore, hoseman of Engine Company, No. 40, James Fleming.
horseman of Engine No. 51, and Harry Piper, battalion chief, Truck No. 4, were the men so distinguished at a meeting in the mayor’s reception room, to which they had been invited. In August, 1917, Moore was in City Hall on an errand when he learned that Andrew Liniski, a bricklayer, had fallen from the roof and his foot had become entangled in a noose at the end of a rope danglinghigh over the sidewalk. It was impossible to draw up the rope.
