Many Fires in Kansas

Kansas must clean up to reduce its fire loss below the present $3 per capita-one of the largest per capita losses of all the States in the Union. That order will be enforced by the new fire marshal's office, established by the last Legislature. Fire Marshal Harris Parkman has appointed as his chief deputy Charles Miller, of Minneapolis. Mr. Miller, in discussing fire losses in this city, said:

“Kansas City, Kan., has many fire dangers which the department under the present city ordinance has been unable to eradicate. In about a week I expect to return and investigate thoroughly. The law which created the fire marshal’s office gives us full power to condemn all unsafe buildings and order changes made in them. The penalty for violating our orders is a fine of from $5 to $50 a day. There is no appe; 1 from our decisions.”
