Many Buildings Burned in Frazee

Fire was discovered in the rear of L. D. Hendry’s store, in Frazee, Minn., at 11 o’clock p. m., recently, and the fire alarm was at once sounded. The fire department responded with commendable promptness, and had two streams on the blaze in short order, but it had gotten too far a start to be controlled, and spread with great rapidity, with the aid of a high wind. Assistance was phoned for from Detroit and Perham, Minn., and these towns sent all of their apparatus by rail. While they arrived too late to stop the fire, the outside departments were of great assistance in preventing the further spread. The conditions were very favorable for a bad fire, as the outbuildings in the vicinity of the origin of the blaze were old ramshackle, unpainted structures, which were quickly licked up and whose burning embers served to spread the blaze. The water supply was also deficient. Eleven buildings were destroyed, including stores, restaurant, warehouse, blacksmith shop, livery stable, bowling alley and barber shop. The local Red Cross rooms were also destroyed. The loss was estimated at $90,000, and it is said that many of the buildings will be rebuilt with cement blocks and brick. This is the second large fire Frazee has experienced, the former one happening twentyyears ago, on the same date and hour as this one.
