LUMBER FIRE AT OTTAWA
A destructive lumber fire recently took place in the lumberyards of Fraser & Co., across the river from Ottawa, Out., and about seven miles northwest from Hull. As help was urgently required, Ottawa sent six men and 2,000 ft. of hose —all that the city fire department could safely spare on account of the dryness of the season last month. The fire, which covered a space of ten acres, burned itself out. The large mill was saved, on account of the wind blowing away from it, as well as from the yards, which were situated at some distance from the mill. The loss on the lumber, destroyed amounted to $450,000. with an insurance of eighty per cent. The cause of the fire was set down to smoking. Onlv the lumber was burned, the buildings, as has been already mentioned, escaping destruction.
