Los Angeles Factory Fires Result in 14 Felonious Counts

FRIDAY NIGHT, December 15, 1961, was one of the busiest in years for Los Angeles City firemen who were still recovering from the Bel-Air disaster of a few short weeks before. For Arson Investigators Delbert Winter and William Witte it was to be an especially memorable night.

Early that evening they were called to the scene of a multiple-alarm fire at Olympic and Crenshaw Boulevards when a fire leveled the huge Von’s supermarket. While Investigators Winter and Witte were satisfying themselves that the supermarket blaze was not of incendiary origin the Westlake Signal Office notified them of another greater alarm in the high-value downtown district at 225 North Los Angeles Street near the Civic Center.
