让它成为一个例子。
The death of President Garfield is regretted by no class more than by Firemen. His loss is sincerely mourned. Called to fill the highest office in the gift of the people he was cut down in the midst of his usefulness by an assassin's bullet. Ambition ceases when the Presidency of the United States is attained. There is no higher position the wide world over. No rightly constituted person can have any real sympathy with a monarch. The thought of living under a hereditary government is repugnant to a person who has once partaken of the blessings of a free country. The people are supreme. True, there are monarchies, but as civilization advances they will become fewer and fewer. Let us hope that their end will not be far distant. Ignorance and superstition are the natural offshoots of a monarchy. Popular education, free thought and free speech are the offspring of a republic. Which condition of things is preferable? In exceptional cases a monarch may be as estimable as the president of a republic, but while the one is a creature of circumstances the other is the creation of the people. Humanity may, perhaps, e»vy a monarch, but it cannot hold him in veneration. It is natural to crave the estimation of your fellows. There is a pleasure in feeling that you have the friendship of those around you that cannot be obtained otherwise. Ambition is a quality that every one should possess. It may take different directions but its object is the same, the ennobling of mankind. But ambition must not be allowed to over leap itself. One must not be impatient. Remember that the world was not made in a day. It lies in the power of every man to improve his condition, but the improvement will be gradual. Anything worth having must be worked for. If the work be done conscientiously it will have its reward. And the reward will usually be in exact proportion to the labor performed.
In the heat of political strife we are apt to lose sight of an important fact. The campaign preceding an election of any kind should be conducted with proper decorum ; if we cannot help indulging in personalities, we should endeavor to forget them when the contest is decided, Of late years there has been a tendency, when a man becomes a candidate'for office, to make him a target for all sorts of abuse. The result of this is apparent. A man of pure character is maligned with relentless force, and with a large number of persons it answers as well to charge an opponent with an offense as it does to prove it. We cannot all become presidents, but we may try to reach a position a little higher than that which we now occupy. It is an honor to hold an office of any kind provided you obtain it honestly It is no slight honor to be made President or Foreman or Secretaiy of a Fire Company. If you are elected to such an office it is proof positive that you have the confidence and respect of your comrades. Here is where the honor lies.
