Lateral Service Pipes.

Lateral Service Pipes.

COMPARING THE RELATIVE MERITS OF LEAD, IRON AND OTHER CLASSES OF PIPES ; FROM BOTH AN ENGINEERING AND A SANITARY STANDPOINT.

The question as to the material to use for lateral or service pipes is one of the most important that usually present themselves to a water board after a public water supply is inaugurated. The usual custom seems tc be to write to a number of places where water-works are in operation, and endeavor, from an analysis of opinions and of experiences, to form some judgment as to what should be adopted. When the various replies are tabulated it is usually found that all the large cities use lead exclusively ; but, among the smaller cities and villages, about as many in number use iron in some form as use lead ; the result is, then, that it is a sort of go-as-youplease, and all sorts and kinds of material are allowed to be used.
