Lack of Fire Protection Results in Loss
Another instance of the unwisdom of allowing valuable suburban or country property to remain without private fire protection is furnished by the fire that recently destroyed a fine barn, with most of its contents, on the Cornwell Estate farm, six miles from North Cornwell, Pa. The building was of wood and stone, two stories in height and 15 years old. The upper part of the building was struck by lightning at 5:10 p.m., and the department received the alarm about 5:20. When it arrived, under command of Chief F. W. McAdam, the barn was all involved, and as there was no apparatus, except hose, little could be done to stop it until it burned itself out. Five hundred feet of Paragon hose were laid, connecting with the creek, and the 20 men engaged were successful in keeping the fire from involving the other buildings, combating it for several hours. The barn, which was valued at $10,800, was a total loss, and the contents, which were grain and agricultural implements, valued at $5,000. suffered damage estimated at $4,000.
