Homemade Water Curtain
The limited amount of level land between the Kanawha River and a mountain ridge in Belle, W. Va., has created a fire problem usually found only in large cities. Homes are built on narrow lots—many only 25 feet wide—and some houses are no more than 10 feet apart. This presents a serious exposure hazard when one of these houses burns.
To combat this exposure hazard, members of the Belle Volunteer Fire Department have devised equipment to produce a “wall of water” to protect exposures. The equipment consists of several 10-foot sections of 2-inch aluminum pipe with 2 1/2-inch couplings so that they can be connected together at the end of a hose line and placed between the burning building and the exposure.
