High School Course Taught By On-Duty Fire Fighters
The Lexington, Mass., High School is operated in a unique manner. An open-campus system allows students to come and go as they please when not taking part in a scheduled class. They are also free, with parental approval, to design their own curriculum based on a few required courses and a great many electives in a wide variety of fields.
The desire of the school administration to offer as large a choice of courses as possible led them to approach the Lexington Fire Department to discuss the feasibility of running a fire science course. As a result, in 1975 Chief Joseph Marshall assigned Deputy Chief John McDonough to set up and operate a classroom program at the high school.
