High Pressure Extension at Wasnington.
The district commissioners want Congress to appropriate $750,000 for a high-pressure fireprotection water system for Washington, D. C., the service to be installed from Fort Reno through the principal business section of the city. Briefly stated, the plan is simply to connect the reservoir with the heart of the city by special mains large enough and strong enough to stand the high pressure and volume of water. Large trunk mains will have to be laid to special hydrants properly distributed over the section to be protected. It is said that the system as at present proposed would require about 200 hydrants, capable of throwing six streams each, any one of which could reach the highest building in the business section. It will be entirely separate from the present water supply system and can be maintained at but small annual expense when once established.
