The hardware store of P. M. Herron, at Auburn. N. Y., was partially destroyed by fire a few days ago. The State fire insurance adjusters, alter going through the building were surprised at the small amount of damage done. The indications were that from the amount of smoke and the appearance of the store, only the admirable manner in which the fire was handled saved the firm from a great loss. M. M. Fisher, the representative of the Globe Insurance Company, said that he had adjusted the claims on some of the largest fires in the State and he had never learned of a fire that was handled in such a capable man ner as this one. He wanted to meet Chief Jewhurst personally and congratulate him on the way he handled the fire, He said that if the fire had not been handled as it was the loss would have been at least $100,000. There was not a stream of water placed in the main building. Mr. Herron said that he was more than pleased with the work of the fire department, but that he was gratified to hear the foremost man in the insurance business state that the handling of the fire was the best that they have ever seen.
