英勇的姐妹死于值班。

Some years ago the Longue Point asylum, Montreal, Que., took fire and was burned to the ground, with considerable loss of life, thirty-five perishing in the flames, including several of the nuns attached to the institution, who died in the endeavor to save their unfortunate charges. A like instance of heroic self-sacrifice has just been afforded at the general hospital of St. Hyacinthe,in the little village of La Providence, about three miles from Montreal, which took fire early on Monday morning and cost the loss of many lives,of which at least six were those of Sisters of Mercy. Twelve were found to be injured, including two of the sisters, whose hurts were very severe. The probabilities a e that they, with others of the injured, may die. An investigation held as soon as possible after the (ire showed that many were missing and that the number of deaths would probably reach at least twenty.

La Providence is a small suburban village outside the city limits and has neither water works nor any tire protection; and to this, of course, is attributable the rapid spread of the (1 tmes and the terrible loss of life. An engine company was at once sent by Chief Benoit from Montreal; but by the time the firemen reached the village the fire had made too great headway to be overcome, even had there been no lack of water. The menhowever, did what they could and were aided by outside help in saving the outbuildings and the adjoining private residences The majority of the injured received their hurts by jumping from the windows. The nuns,on the contrary, appear to have nobly stuck to tl.eir posts and met their deaths inside the building to get the 200 patients safely out of danger.
