“As we approach the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11th we are reminded of the critical importance of providing for the safety and security of the United States and its citizens,” said Arizona Gov. Janice Brewer, co-chair of the committee. “As governors, securing our borders and our citizens is a top priority. Hearing from Mr. Aguilar gave us an opportunity to learn what strategies and steps U.S. Customs and Border Protection is taking to ensure safety.”
“Protecting citizens’ safety remains a responsibility of governors,” said Maryland Gov. Dr. Flynn’s presentation offered us the opportunity to look at different ways individuals and communities can play a critical role in response and recovery efforts.”
Mr. Aguilar briefed governors on the critical role CBP plays in protecting the nation from terrorist attacks. CBP has a priority mission of keeping terrorists and their weapons out of the United States; it also has a responsibility for securing and facilitating trade and travel while enforcing hundreds of U.S. regulations, including immigration and drug laws. Dr. Flynn discussed best practices that states, communities and individuals can put into place to strengthen resiliency in disaster response and recovery.
Also during the committee session Gov. Brewer and Gov. O’Malley introduced a resolution honoring the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and recognizing the service of first responders who assisted with response and recovery.
