The first rate order prevailing in the good Samaritan; hospital in Portland, Ore., the quick and well regulated work of the private fire department of the institution,among whose firemen not the least efficient were two Chinese cooks, the splendid service of the city fire department under Chief Campbell and District Engineer Young while a fierce northwest wind was blowing, not only saved the whole building from being destroyed, but also gave the physicians and nurses of the institution ample time to get out without panic or injury, every one of the eighty-three patients, some of whom were unable to rise from their beds. When the department reached the scene of the fire, the hospital seemed doomed, but the flames were fought so stubbornly and intelligently that they were confined to one of the north wings, and the damage by fire and water was kept down to $6 000. The cause of the fire was a defective flue.
