A firethat killed two Frostburg University studentson December 3 in Frostburg, Maryland, was caused by an overheated flue pipe in the students’ second-floor apartment, investigators say. Additionally, there were no working smoke alarms found it the apartment, since the structure was built before the passage of a 1990 law that requires sprinkler systems in all new multi-family structures.
The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s office issued a statement saying the three-alarm fire was sparked by an overheated flue pipe that led from a wood-burning stove to the exterior of the building via a wooden-frame wall on the first floor. The fire quickly spread to an adjacent apartment and up into the second-floor rear apartment, occupied by the two victims.
