FOUR TRACKS ON NEW YORK STREETS.
TWO rival street railways holding possession of Amsterdam avenue, this city, on which there are four lines of tracks, intend, in defiance of the outcry raised by those who live along, and in the immediate neighborhood of the avenue, not only to retain the existing four tracks, at present operated by horses, but also to change the motive power, and run the cars by means of an underground trolley. Experience has already shown that the four track system is not only a hindrance to traffic, but also a menace to life and limb, especially to the thousands of school children who have to cross them daily in order to reach the schools situated on the avenue, to those who attend the many churchs along the route, and to the inmates of these charitable institutions located upon it those for the blind, for indigent and infirm women, and for aged and infirm men and women. Gen.Collis. superintendent of public works, has also shown that the whole of the avenue is underlain by such a net work of water mains and sewers.to say nothing of gas pipes and the like, that to dig it up for the purpose of affording two rival roads facilities for operating an underground trolley system would be the source of infinite expense to the city and inconvenience to the citizens, and would besides damage the sewerage and water system of the district. For which reason he has forbidden the upheaval of the surface for more than is required for laying down than oie undergroun 1 trolley system, to be used in common by the two rival companies.
The fire department has also condemned the proposed scheme. In a letter addressed to Nf r. T. A. Fulton.to whom, w th Mr. S J.Luckings, both of whom do business upon and result* either on,or within a few feet of Amsterdam avenue, has been appointed the lion’s share of the work of agitating the laying down of two tracks only, the fire commissioners have informed him of the adoption of the, following resolution at a meeting held on September to.
