We don’t want accidents to happen but they will happen and then it is a mighty good thing to know what to do when the accident occurs. You would be surprised if you knew, as we know, how many accidents there are that are aggravated because of lack of knowledge. A little knowledge is dangerous but today total ignorance is more dangerous. We are rated as the most careless people in the world. We kill, maim and injure more people in one month here than all Europe does in a year. In the industrial world, notwithstanding the work they are doing along the lines of prevention, yet in 1917 it cost the industries in this country a billion and a half simply for loss of time. That is too much on the industries of the nation. Then when you remember that industry has a less percentage of accidents—the greater percentage outside of the industries—then it is time, as a nation, that we wake up to the fact to teach first aid. What is first aid? It is that work that is Johnny on the spot when the accident occurs, because you know in all serious accidents the first ten or fifteen minutes is the determining factor in the life of the person hurt. That is true in cases of burns, poison, and in cases of asphyxiation and particularly drowning. Consequently the man or woman who is there and knows what to do is the man or woman that is the positive asset. Even in Minneapolis and St. Paul we don’t get an ambulance immediately and not always a doctor. We have an illustration of that of a butcher who was dressing a beef and as the cleaver came down it slipped and caught him on the back of the leg. The ambulance was twelve minutes in coming there, but before that time the man was gone. The crowd gathered, they tied a rag around it, as they usually do, and by the time the doctor comes it is usually too late.
