The number of theatres in Europe is 1457, divided among the different countries as follows: Italy, 348; France,337; Germany, 194; Spain, 164; England, 150; Austria and Hungary, 132; Russia,44; Belgium, 34; Holland; 22; Switzerland, 20; Sweden and Norway, 18; Portugal, 16; Denmark, 10, Turkey, 4 and Greece, 4. It is estimated that 400 theatres exist in America, of which 17 were burned in 1882. England lost 7; Russia, 5; Germany, 4; France, 2; Spain, 2; Belgium, 1; Bulgaria, 1, and Roumania, 1. Throughout the world the average life of a theatre, according to these statistics, would be about 45 years.
