FIRE STANDPIPE TEST.

FIRE STANDPIPE TEST.

The new standpipes on the Hotel Manhattan, New York, were tested Monday last by Chief Croker, and pronounced by him entirely successful. These standpipes are now ordered bv law to be placed on all large hotels, with connections to fit the couplings of fire apparatus, and as this test was in a way one of the efficacy of standpipes for the entire city, many officials and hotel proprietors were present.

The Hotel Manhattan is seventeen stories, or 225 feet high. Engines Nos. 26 and 65 were used in the test, and. by making a Siamese connection, a stream of water was forced tn the top of the pipe and fell near the Grand Central station. The test showed a water pressure of 290 pounds at the engine and seventy five pounds on top of the hotel. The steam pressure varied from 115 to 120 pounds. Following the test on the roof of the building, the valves on the upper floors of the hotel were opened and the lines of hose on each floor tested. The several lengths of the underwriters hose used in the hotel and made by the Eureka Fire Hose company were afterwards tested on the street and stood a pressure of 150 pounds without any appreciable effect.
