Fire Report From Portland.

Chief M. N. Eldridge, of the Portland, Me., fire department, reports that in 1908 there were 527 fire alarms of all kinds, including 153 bell alarms and 374 still or telephone alarms—showing an increase of 116 over the preceding year. The fire loss shows an increase of $1,457,624.50 over 1907. But it must not be forgotten that Portland was visited with at least 3 conflagrations during 1908. There were nine second and four general alarms. Four calls were for out of town fires.
