The municipal civil service commission is preparing a series of examination questions for applicants for the position of chief of this city's fire department, which Chief Croker must pass before he can draw the pay of his rank A recent decision of the Appellate division has, it is said, changed the opinion of Fire Commissioner Scannell, who has heretofore maintained that he had the right to appoint the chief without examination. Chief Croker has a suit pending to compel the payment of his salary, a counterpart of the case recently decided, and this latter suit was considered by all parties as a test case.
The men of truck No. 7 on East Twenty-eighth street, Manhattan, presen ted a gold medal to Fireman William Ryan of the company, who has completed thirty-five"years of service in the department. Capt. Donohue in making the presentation speech referred to Fireman Ryan as one of the scaling-ladder heroes of the Windsor fire.
