In 1884 he met with his only serious accident, a tumble from third floor to basement, at a sugar refinery in Bow, which might easily have resulted more seriously than it did. Mr. Pordage’s services were frequently in requisition when distinguished foreigners inspected the working of the department, as he is an excellent linguist, and he was publicly thanked for them on the occasion of a visit of Belgian Burgomasters in 1888. Mr. Fordage received the appointment of superintendent of the Portsmouth fire brigade in the summer of 1891, and devoted himself with energy and ability to the work of placing the department in that important seaport upon a satisfactory basis. He has left it in a condition which reflects credit, not only upon himself, but upon the watch committee and the chief constable, who have at all times supported Mr. Fordage in obtaining from the corporation every necessary' improvement.
