Fire Marshal's Office Plays Major Part in Ontario Fire Service

BEFORE A SCHOOL is built or added to in the Province of Ontario, the plans are submitted to the Fire Marshal's Office at its headquarters in Toronto. There a team of fire safety engineers examine them, and every precaution to prevent the spread of fire in a building, quick escape routes and the location of emergency equipment are plotted on the plans by the engineers. The same treatment is given all private and public hospitals and all Ontario government buildings and institutions. Upon request, the Fire Engineering Division also makes special inspections of buildings for fire safety and assists fire departments in making and enforcing their inspection programs. However, this is only one facet of the organization that is directed by Fire Marshal Martin S. Hurst.
