Part, 1 insurance report for Rhode Island for 1894, gives the fire business written in that state during the year as $8,662,887, an increase of $134,102 over the previous year; premium receipts, $78,379, an increase of $6,602 over 1893, while the losses paid were $28,371, against $56,274, for the year before. On December 31, 1894, there were twentyfour Rhode Island mutual companies which filed their statements, and their total cash assets on that date were $4,439,310; liabilities, $2,254,444; surplus over all liabilities, $2,184,866; risks in force, $433 696,621, an increase during the year of $21,386,291. Fifty stock fire companies, four less than reported for 1893, show business written in Rhode Island amounting to $57,850,703; premium receipts, $582,. 933; losses incurred, $305,781; losses paid. $290,792. The returns made by the agents of the different companies authorized to transact business in the state show fire risks written of $78,731,221; premium receipts, $895,320; marine risks written, $5,004,918; premium receipts, $12,553. The total amount of fire and marine business written in the sate was$507,975,821; premiumreceipts, $4,678,588; losses paid, $1,166,863, with the ratio of losses paid to premiums of 24.9 per cent, against 41.3 per cent, in 1893.
