Fire in Hardware Plant at Eastport
The Capen Decorating plant at Eastport, Me., was seriously damaged by fire on July 16. Spontaneous combustion is said to have been the cause of the fire which burned for ten hours in the three-story frame structure located on the wharf. The fire was discovered on the second floor of the building at 7.15 a. m., and the fire department was summoned at once. There were no walls or partitions to check the spread of the blaze. About 20 persons were employed in the building, but no lives were lost. Twenty-five firemen worked at the fire with four streams from two fireboats. and six hydrant streams. The city standpipe and direct pumping systems maintained 80-pound pressure through the 14-inch main.
