FIRE DEPARTMENTS IN SOUTH AFRICA.

Since the conclusion of the Anglo-Boer war and the establishment of British rule in the Transvaal and the Orange Free State, great attention has been paid to the question of fire protection, with the result that in the principal cities of South Africa not only have the fire departments in Capetown, Durban and one or two other originally British towns been strengthened and improved, but new departments have been established in those newly acquired as the outcome of the struggle, and others so remodeled as to bring them up to the standard of the day. In many instances American methods are being followed, and American apparatus has been installed, with every prospect of these being more extensively adopted. These have been described from time to time by South African correspondents in the pages of FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERING, and special mention has been made of the great favor the Gamewell Fire Alarm Telegraph company’s installations have met with in the eyes of the fire chiefs.
