FIRE AND WATER
MORE than two-thirds of the large buildings of St. Paul, Minn., are so poorly equipped with fire escapes that in the event of a great fire a large loss of life would be almost unavoidable. Here and there a large building has a stand-pipe with an iron ladder attachment, but only a tight-rope walker could descend on them safely. We have heard a great deal about the enterprise of the twin cities of Minnesota, but until St. Paul does something more substantial in the line of fire protection, we must decline to listen to any further twanging of its lyre.
