Filtration.

Work on the filtration plant at Fargo, N. D, is progressing rapidly. The steel in the structure weights 360,000 pounds. The excavation for the basins and foundation have all been completed and the superstructure work begun. The entire structure will be absolutely fireproof. This is the reason for the use of so much steel and concrete in the proposed building.

The new filtration plant now under construction at Columbia Heights for Minneapolis, Minn., was recently" inspected by city officials. Work is being rapidly pushed but will not be completed until the fall of 1912. It has been delayed on account of trouble in securing men who would remain on the job, and through difficulty in securing material, according to engineers in charge of the work. According to Alderman C. D. Gould, chairman of the committee on waterworks. the plant will cost approximately $700,000. The old reservoirs are being used and an expense of fully $1,000,000 is thereby saved. Only tbe ground floor of the plant is completed, and when finished the structure will have five stories. In this building the water pumped from the river into the first receiving tank will be purified. Much machinery will be installed and facilities for holding two great tanks of clean water. The average capacity will be 40,000,000 gallons a day. From the filtration plant the clean water will be conducted to the clear water tank, which will be sealed in an immense concrete tank. Tbe old reservoir is being greatly enlarged and when completed will hold 43,000,0O0 gallons. The old tank held but 2-1,000,000.
