A report of a meeting of this committee recently published shows what important work is done to prevent fire in factories where in one case two fire drills are given every day, while the law only requires one. Besides tending to strengthen the employees’ protection against fire, the drills eliminate much of the ordinary danger from running, scuffling and pushing. This is a hazard which is considered to be quite serious in numerous factories and many rules have failed as fast as they have been adopted. The disorder occurs when the employees leave their work at noon and at the end of the day. The fire drill makes it necessary for them to march out of the shops in order and without reckless haste, which has proven to be the cause of so many accidents and fatalities.
