Explosion and Fire in Big Warehouse.
火在the warehouse of the Wirick Storage company, Cleveland, early on the morning of August 16, presented some features of unusual interest, largely because of the terrific explosion.
The building occupied a space 50x140 ft. and was five stories high. It was of brick, about 10 years old and without sprinklers. The cause of the explosion which started the fire is unknown. Jt injured six men and one woman and blew down all the floors and partitions in the structure and lifted the roof from the walls. When the department arrived the building was all afire inside. Six engines and a fireboat and three hook and ladder companies responded. There were sufficient hydrants for connections to all the engines and a hydrant pressure was maintained at about 40 lb. by direct pumpage. The main on the street is 12-in. Ten engine streams were thrown at one time. The nozzles ranged from to 2-in. The number of feet of hose is not reported, but it was cot ton rubber-lined and two lengths burst.
