IN LATE SUMMER of 1875, a church in Rockville Centre, N. Y., was completely destroyed by fire. As a result, a small group of men met on September 25, 1875 to organize Eureka Hook, Ladder & Bucket Company No. 1. It was the first fire company on the south shore of Long Island between Jamaica and Freeport.
