English Turbine Well Pumps

In a former article the writer made mention that vertical shaft turbine well pumps had been adopted by the British South Staffordshire water works, a concern which has extensive ramifications in the Midlands and maintains a number of very fine steam stations. Their adoption of this method of water pumping is comparatively recent and is an indication of an appreciation by a concern which has not only a very wide experience in water works but incidentally is a sound financial concern. The unit described and illustrated herewith is driven by a 300 H. P. four stroke Diesel engine through gearing. It has four cylinders 15 x 16 9/16 inches. The pump is installed at a depth of 210 feet below ground but it is designed to pump if required front a depth of 300 feet to which it would be lowered if necessary. From the sectional view it will be observed that there are 6 stages, consisting of double inlet self balancing impellers working in series. The second stage is at the moment eliminated, there being a dummy as shown, but in the event of the pump being lowered it would be fitted.

At a, there is a hydraulic balancing piston upon which the whole of the working parts of the pump float when running the leakage water returning to the suction pipe via pipes b and c. Shaft d which is of steel is encased in a gun metal sleeve e.
