Elliott Exonerated.

Elliott Exonerated.

The coroner’s jury which has been endeavoring to fix the responsibility for the death of six men killed October 5, in Detroit, Mich., by the falling of the walls of a burning building, has rendered a verdict fully exonerating Assistant Chief Elliott and the fire department. The jury was unable to determine from the evidence presented what was the cause of the collapse of the walls, but was unanimous in freeing the department from blame. The verdict further savs: “ In view of the evidence presented we deem it our duty to ask that the common council shall give enlarged authority to the building inspectors and require that they shall reinspect all commercial, mtnufacturing, hotel and other public buildings, and place the information in the hands of the fire department, to the end that the department may know the present condition and risks from structural weakness, tanks or other structures upon the roofs of said buildings, or any other reasons which render hazardous the controlling of conflagrations in said buildings; and the jury would further recommend that the fire department shall acknowledge the receipts of said reports as made from time to time by the building inspector, and keep a perfect record of the same where they shall be subject to the inspection of all chiefs and other officers of the fire department, who are likely to be on duty and in command during a conflagration.”

The jury concludes its verdict with a deserved compliment to the bravery of the firemen who lost their lives by the accident.
