电梯FIRE AT TORONTO.

The large elevator, leased by the city council to the Canadian Pacific railway, at the foot of Bathurst street, Toronto, Ont , burned by an incendiary, who has been arrested. The building, which was of wood, covered with corrugated iron, was empty. Loss, $12,000; insurance, 16,000. There was a deal of mismanagement over the fire, which showed the necessity for the immediate selection of a competent chief of the fire department. There was only a substitute engineer for the Ronald engine—and apparently a poor one at that; the crew of another engine had forgotten the section hose, to be stretched to the lake, and none could be found to fit it, and the only available engine was coupled to the only available hydrant, while the others stood temporarily idle. Much nnseemly wrangling took place between one of the aldermen and the deputy chief and the substitute engineer. The corrugated iron sheathing of the building rendered it impossible for the water thrown on it to penetrate to the wooden structure inside. The streams simply turned into steam on the redhot surface, and no impression could be made on the fire till the tower itself fell in. The firemen, however, saved the adjoining buildings and lumber piles. The man arrested is probably a pyromaniac.
