Dancers Driven to Street by Fire in Lansing Building, Syracuse
While a dance was in progress and 25 couples were on the floor of the dance hall on the fourth floor of the Lansing Building, in the centre of Syracuse, N. Y., fire broke out from a gas range in the kitchen and quickly put an end to the festivities. A policeman discovered the fire and phoned an alarm at 10:53 p. m. The dancers all escaped safely to the street, and no one was injured. The building—100 x 80 feet—was four stories in height and was constructed of brick. It was comparatively old, as it had been built about 60 years. Flames were bursting from the upper windows, when the firemen, under Chief T. F. Ryan, arrived, with fire engines, two combinations, three trucks and one water tower. During the fire, which burned one hour and a half, an AhrensFox pumper did good work. There were plenty of 6-inch double hydrants spaced about 200 feet part, with a pressure of 95 pounds, there being pressure sufficient to supply good plug streams for the engines. One hydrant and eight engine streams were thrown, using 1 ¼inch nozzles. The building was valued at $40,000 and the contents at $25,000. The loss has not yet been adjusted.
