Court Ruling Lets Black Firefighter Candidates Retest in Chicago

As part of a court ruling earlier this year on a $30 million lawsuit, hundreds are getting a second chance at becoming a Chicago (IL) firefighter.

In 1995, the Chicago (IL) Fire Department gave a hiring test that was ruled to be unfair to black candidates. Now the department must hire 111 firefighters if they meet a physical standards requirement and are still interested in the position, according to a report on myFOXchicago.com (http://bit.ly/rSgCJ4).

The other candidates who are not hired will receive $5,000 in damages.

The department is testing 80 applicants per day, and testing is scheduled to go on for four or five days.
