Failure of Water Supply at Signal Plant Fire.
To the Editor: We would like to call your attention to an article on Page 177 of your March 28 edition in which you refer to the recent fire at the plant of the Union Switch and Signal Company. In this article you very carefully describe the fire fighting equipment of the plant, very specifically station the amount of hose in the hose houses, connected with the standpipes, and you also mention the use of the hand-drawn hose reels. However, you do not give the reason why all of this equipment failed to save this plant from almost complete loss. If you will refer to a special report made by the Manufacturers’ Mutual Fire Insurance Company you will find that the entire trouble was due to the failure of the water supply on which the before-mentioned equipment depended for its operation. Your article casts more or less reflection on private fire protection methods. The fact remains that the work of the fire companies was very much hampered by the same lack of water and we feel that you should correct the impression that your description of the fire is likely to make among your readers.
