WASHING THE STREETS.

Early on Wednesday morning an xperiment was made in the presence of Fire Commissioner Purroy, Mayor Grace, Superintendent of Police Murray, General Shaler, president of the Board of Health, and many other prominent New York citizens, in washing some of the streets in the Fourth ward with salt water. The purpose of the experiment was to develop the cleansing of the streets in case of an outbreak of cholera or any other epidemic. The fireboat Havemeyer was placed near the New York tower of the Brooklyn bridge, and pumped water into the department’s portable water tank, and then two fire engines pumped the water from the tank and flooded Cherry, Roosevelt and a large number of other streets. Afterward the party proceeded to Leonard and Baxter streets, where the streets were flooded by the hydrants. Another experiment will be made in a few days in the streets where the population is very large.
