CHIEF OFFICER PARKER RESIGNS.

CHIEF OFFICER PARKER RESIGNS.

After less than five years’ service G. W. Parker has resigned his position as chief officer of the Manchester fire brigade. This step, it is authoritatively said, has been taken at the request of the watch committee of the city council, between whom and Chief Parker the relations have for some time past been of a very strained character. Chief Officer Parker is one of the best known officers in the fire service. His earliest experience was acquired in the neighborhood of Salford, the borough adjoining Manchester, whence in January, 1886, he was appointed superintendent of the Bootle fire brigade, and in his six years of office there he was successful in re-organising the brigade and bringing it up to a high state of efficiency. His success in Bootle was mainly instrumental in gaining for him the position of chief officer of the Belfast. Ireland, fire brigade in 1886, where he did such good work that in June, 1899, he was selected to fill the position of chief officer of the Manchester fire brigade. His term of office in the latter city has been marked by some important improvements in the fire protective arrangements there.
