Chief Keeps Issue Alive, High Rises Get Sprinklers
Due largely to the patient efforts of Milwaukee Fire Chief William Stamm over a period of months, two major high rise office structures now under construction in the city—including Wisconsin’s tallest building—will be sprinklered on all floors. Changes in building plans to include full sprinkler coverage were announced by the owners early in December.
Stamm was most concerned about the 42-story, $50-million First Wisconsin Center, about half completed when the change was made. He had requested sprinklers when reviewing the original plans. However, the owners decided not to go beyond the local fire code, which requires sprinklers only in basement areas plus two floors above grade.
