Chicago Firemen’s Pension Fund

Ways and means of replenishing the Chicago firemen’s pension fund were discussed last week by delegates representing each of the twenty-six battalions of the department. The meeting was held in the quarters of Engine Company No. 13. Chief Thomas O’Connor presided. At Chief Connor’s suggestion a committee of nine firemen was selected to devise plans to keep the fund from becoming bankrupt. “Our only hope for relief is from the legislature,” said Chief O’Connor. “Our committee has been empowered and charged with the task of appealing to the members of the legislature to increase the source of revenue for the pension fund. Unless they are successful the fund is bound to become bankrupt.” The pension fund now amounts to about $202,000. but at the present rate of disbursement it is liable to become insolvent within two years, unless the system of financing is improved. The committee consists of Battalion Chief Jeremiah McAuliffe. chairman: Battalion Chief George H. McAllister, Capt. Patrick Lyons, Lieut. Edward Riley, and Firemen Dennis J. Ryan, James Porter, John Dooley, John McGarvey, and Herman Pfotenhauer.
