Ethylene dichloride is a flammable, toxic, corrosive, narcotic, oily, clear, colorless liquid with a sweet odor reminiscent of ether or chloroform. Among its uses are as a degreaser, drycleaning agent, extractant, fumigant, insecticide, pickling agent, and solvent; and as a raw material in the manufacture of adhesives, antiknock compounds, cosmetics, finish removers, penetration agents, pharmaceuticals, rubber and plastics compounds, soaps, varnishes, wetting agents, and many other chemicals. It also is a primary material for ore flotation, photography, and water softening. It recently ranked as the 14th highestvolume chemical in the United States. It is a potential human carcinogen.
