BOSTON PROTECTIVE DEPARTMENT.
The twenty-third annual report of the Boston protective department, covering the interval between March 1, 1895 and March 1. 1866, shows that the total receipts for the year amounted to $80,992; the cash balance on hand being $8,594. The total number of alarms during the year 1896 (January 1 to December 31, inclusive) was 1,397, of which 1,132 were for fires; of these 546 occurred in brick, stone, iron, etc., buildings, 485 in frame buildings and 101 outside; the number of fires to 1,000 population were 2.28. Of these fires 851 were confined to the floor where they originated, 986 the buiiding where they originated, thirty-four extended to adjoining property, and eleven extended beyond adjoining property; the per cent, of fires confined to buildings where they originated was eightyseven. The total loss on buildings and contents was $1,367,166: total insurance, $13,215,327, and the total insurance loss was $[,263,934.
